Application Icon Template |
|
This is a layered Photoshop file containing a template for a standard Mac OS X application icon, in the TextEdit/Project Builder style. Each element (main page, secondary page, and tool) is on a separate layer, with appropriate Layer Styles for drop-shadows. Perspectives and angles are correct for this style of icon. This file includes the Fountain Pen graphic by Michael McCracken; see below.

Below is a collection of links to useful icon-related resources for developers, including sites where icons can be downloaded and/or purchased, icon design contractors, and more.
Icon-related Cocoa Source Code
Our source code page contains Cocoa sample code showing how to retrieve the file icon for any filetype (such as "html", "rtf" and so on), or the application icon of the user's default handler application for any internet protocol (such as "http:" for the default web-browser, "mailto:" for the default email client, and so on).
Obj-C Source Toolbar Icons
A collection of useful toolbar icons for your applications. See elsewhere on the site for source code and other developer-oriented goodies.
Apple User Experience Aqua Icon Design resources
Apple's Aqua Icon Design page includes tips, tricks and further links, and also offers an Aqua Icon Kit for download, which includes Photoshop 7 templates and actions to help you create document and plugin icons for your applications.
The IconFactory
No list of Mac icon resources would be complete without mentioning the venerable IconFactory. They offer contract design services, and have now also created StockIcons.com, where you can purchase and download pre-made sets of toolbar icons for Mac OS X, Windows XP, and more.
Icon Designers for hire
Hire any of these talented icon designers to give your app's UI a professional finish.
Rick Roe's Icons.cx
Amongst many other goodies, Icons.cx has plenty of classic Mac OS (32x32 pixels) icons you're allowed to distribute, which are perfect for your NSToolbars.
