Clickers
A strange little application to help you count things. Yes, really.

Note: Clickers runs on Mac OS X as well as Mac OS 8 and 9!

  Information

What do I need to use it?

You need a PowerPC Mac, and an insane zeal for bizarre software. If you want to see a 68k version of Clickers, please contact us and let us know.

Why did you make it?

Because Lynn Grillo requested it. She works for Adobe, and she frequently answers questions on various product-support web forums and email lists. She has to keep a tally of how many messages she reads and replies to, so she conceived of something called a "clicker". She asked if we knew of any such thing, and we didn't, so we made one. And thus Clickers was born. In years to come, this story will become known as the Legend of Clickers.

What about those clicking things which Spanish dancers hold? Aren't they clickers?

No; they're "castanets". Clickers is not in any way a castanet simulator. We're not even sure how that would work.

Show me some screenshots of this utterly bonkers thing.

Take a look below.

What is Clickers?

Clickers is an application which allows you to keep a running total of up to ten things, and record the date from which you started counting. We know that sounds really strange. Read on to find out some of the method behind this utter madness.

What does it do?

It shows a window with ten "clickers". A clicker is just a running total of something you want to keep track of, with the date you started counting, the name of the thing, the current total, and an "add one" button. You click the button to increase the count by one; hence "Clickers". Clickers saves all the information when you quit, and reloads it when launched. It even remembers where you put its window.

By now, you're probably thinking we've lost our minds entirely. Just read a little bit more (specifically, the section below called "Why did you make it?"), before you call the men in the white coats. Please.

What nice features does it include?

All these:

  • Small interface
  • Tracks up to ten counts simultaneously
  • Automatically inserts the date and time when you start or reset a counter
  • Automatically saves all information when you quit, and reloads it when launched
  • Remembers the position and size of its window between launches, and which Clicker you last had selected
  • Resizable (show more/less rows; snaps to rows when drag-resizing)
  • More/Less buttons (adds/removes visible rows)
  • Summary row, updated continuously
  • Reset All function (with warning)
  • Export clickers as tab-delimited text (for importing into Excel, FileMaker, GoLive, etc)
  • Export clickers as tab-delimited text for importing into Polytrope Counter
  • Export clickers as a Web Page, using your own HTML templates!
  • Add One and Subtract One buttons (affect the currently selected row)
  • Everything is keyboard-navigable:

  • Subtract One (from currently selected row) is cmd-- (cmd-dash)
  • Reset (currently selected row) is cmd-R
  • Reset All is cmd-shift-R
  • Export Tab-text is cmd-E
  • Export Tab-text for Polytrope Counter is cmd-shift-E
