PageThing 1.x
A webpage batch-creation AppleScript tool for image galleries.
"You're a GOD!"
- Daniel Brown, Web Products Evangelist at Adobe, upon trying PageThing 1.0.
PageThing 1.x est maintenant disponible en Français.
Remember that you can also get PageThing 2 here!
Information |
(Informations disponibles en Français.) PageThing 1.x is a small AppleScript application which automates a tedious part of web-design: the creation of webpages to show a series of images, with navigational links between those pages. Say you had 20 images, and wanted to make a page for each image - like a gallery. You'd normally make one page, insert the image and links, then copy it 19 times. Then you'd have to alter every single one of those pages, updating the links and changing the image as appropriate. How annoying, boring and time-consuming! That's where PageThing comes in. You can just choose the basic formatting of your pages, show PageThing which folder your images are in, and your pages will be created automatically! PageThing will even take care of making sure all your navigational links are in place, and won't place a "previous page" link on the first page or a "next page" link on the last page. PageThing works fast, too. You can make about one page per second with PageThing, and G3 users will be able to work even faster. |

Instructions |
(Informations disponibles en Français.) Here's a quick tutorial, showing 6 steps to saving time. 1 " Prepare your images. Put all your images (GIFs and/or JPEGs) into a folder. Make sure there are no other items in the folder, and no subfolders. 2 " Launch PageThing. You'll see the screen below. You can choose to make pages immediately, but we'll look at the default values first. 3 " Edit the default values for your pages, then choose "Make pages". Click the "Edit defaults" button to enter your own values for your pages. Once you're happy with the values, click the "Make pages" button. PageThing will remember your values even after you've quit. 4 " Let PageThing do its stuff! PageThing will just ask you to select a folder, then you can sit back whilst all your pages are created for you. Once PageThing is finished, you'll see a dialog showing how many pages were made. 5 " Take a look in the folder of images... and see the new pages! You'll see that PageThing has created a webpage for each image, within the same folder. All of these pages are linked to each other with text hyperlinks, and have the settings you chose previously in PageThing. 6 " View the pages in a web-browser. You'll see that all your images have a page each, and all the pages are linked and formatted as you chose. Easy! That's it! That's all there is to using PageThing. Your custom page settings will be remembered for whenever you next need to use PageThing. PageThing saves your settings inside itself, not in a Preference file, so you can just copy PageThing onto another Mac and still keep your previous settings. |

Thanks |
PageThing came into existence one frenzied afternoon after receiving a request for such a script, from one of the members of the GoLiveTalk mailing list. So, thanks to that person, Joshua Goldberg, for the idea. Huge thanks to Didier Laget, a fellow member of the XXII Group, for the French translation of PageThing and for creating and hosting the French version of this page. My gratitude also goes to five people who volunteered their services in providing the StuffIt archives for pre-5 versions of Expander. Those compression cowboys are René Brouwer, Steve Thomas, Donald G., John Vitollo and Rafael Archuleta. Thanks, guys! Another mention also goes to René Brouwer, for both pointing out a bug in the original version and also suggesting an improvement (now implemented in version 1.0.1 and later). All hail the AppleScript King! Extra special thanks go to Daniel Brown, my colleague at Adobe, for the excellent blurb quote you saw at the top of the page. Daniel doesn't want his email address linked here because, as he put it: "I get enough strange stuff." Thanks also to all the folks at Adobe, and every single one of the GoLiveTalk subscribers. Special mentions go to Irv Kanode for his tireless brilliance and professionalism, Steve Joyner for putting up with my constant teasing regarding Steffi Graf, and John Kranz for being so great to work with. |
